Tako Sushi Restaurant Review

Filed under: Foodicus and I — fongga @ 21:54 pm

Just came back from dinner at a local Japanese restaurant, Tako Sushi, just south of Leslie and York Mills. A flyer had been sent to us announcing a new Teppanyaki offering, along with a 20% discount. Needless to say, there’s a reason for the discount. The food was mediocre, reminding us of the food at Memories of Japan. I haven’t gone back to that restaurant for many years, and we’re not likely to go back to this place. Even the simple salmon roll and California roll was ugly and unappetizing.

The waiter was not well trained, and also slightly clumsy, managing to knock over two tea cups during our meal. They did have a novel paper order process, whereby the waiter circled the ordered food items in a table of meat choices. However, the cooks did not read the tables properly, and managed to serve up halibut despite a tuna being marked. The cook also burned the first piece of cod, which he did voluntarily replace at no charge. But then, why serve it if it’s not prepared to standard? He was also awkward with the cooking utensils and didn’t handle the knife and fork well when cutting up the bigger cuts of meat. All in all, the service was very novice, and the food was plain. The environment was cold, causing several complaints in our corner, but the response was a shrug of the shoulder and a ‘nothing I can do about it’ apology. Most patrons ended up wearing their coats. The highlight of the evening was was a heavy pour of a cooking wine and a short flambe. The extra warmth was like a welcoming camp fire. Unfortunately, like the food, the experience quickly turned cold.

Pomegranates and Chicken Korma

Filed under: Foodicus and I — fongga @ 19:39 pm

We’re eating some chicken korma, May made, from the Dean and Deluca’s cookbook And golly it is good! I’m not a big milk eater, being lactose intolerant, but the dish was yummy. Here’s a picture of the dish. The biggest complaint was the presentation, or lack of colour. We’ll have to add some green and orange ingredients the next time we make this dish.

poms-whole.jpgRecently, pomegranates showed up in force at the local Loblaws. I bought 8qty since I love this little fruit. We used to eat them back in Singapore when we were kids, but the mess is terrible. Anyway, there were instructions on-line for a low mess method and I tried it with some success. Now that I’m on my third pom, I can take one apart in about 10 min or so. I did try another method using a electric hand juicer, but my overly enthusiastic press created a silty finish. Anyway, for those not familiar with this fruit the seeds are the key. I normally stick the seeds in a ziplock and pop each of them like bubblewrap. I then seperate and mix with some club soda for a refreshing drink. Apparently they’re only available from September to January so I’m going to squeeze the season for all its worth.

Introduction to topics in blog

Filed under: Uncategorized — fongga @ 20:40 pm

This blog will be about food, family, news, and plastic innovation.

I love food, not just eating, but also the creation, the taste, and the smell. It’s a mini gift from the chef, whether its wrapped in newspaper or in a banana leaf. I enjoy cooking and baking, and a discussion on food and cooking is always welcomed. I like the food sciences and the romanticism around meals equally.

Family is obvious , but likely names and places have been changed to protect the innocent.

News will entail everything from personal editorials and comments to items picked up from everyday living. If it’s interesting to you, great! If not, c’est la vie!

The first three topics makes sense, but why plastics? It impacts every part of our lives, for better or for worse, and so I think it will always be a topic of interest in the back of my mind. feel I must allow the geeky engineer side of me to speak out, lest it lashes out uncontrollably in my personal blogs.
